The first location of a schoolhouse in this district was along what was then referred to as "the north road" which today
is called North Street. It is believed that the first building was on the east side of the road between the farms of
J. Fairbank and J. Davis.
1860 - In 1860 a new schoolhouse was built.
1872 - Paint was purchased for the building in 1872 but not used due to the
bad weather.
1879 - In 1879 a fence was place around the schoolhouse.
1883 - In 1883 the town voted $350 to move the schoolhouse closer to the
mill at Springdale. At this time the district was no longer called New
State, but Springdale.
1884 - In 1884 the town contracted with B. W. Dean of Worcester to move
the house to a new location for the sum of $150. J. Greenman Smith,
Esq., owner of the Springdale Mill, gave the town one acre of land
along Manning Street, opposite Springdale Road for the location of
the school. The building was moved through the woods and fields to
its location on Manning Street. The setting of the underpinning,
digging and stoning of a well, a pump for the same, building steps and
outhouse, and fencing the lot amounted to $121.39. The remaining
amount of the $350 was spent on plastering and painting of the
interior during the summer break.
1888 - In 1888 better sanitary arrangements were made.
1893 - In 1893 a new chimney was installed. Single seats and desks were also
placed in the schoolhouse.
Springdale School, 1900
1921 - The school continued until the spring of 1921 when the 8 students
were transferred to District #12 - the Quinapoxet School.
1927 - In 1927 the school was sold to James E. Welsh and converted into a
private residence.
