District 7:
The Rice's — Squantum School

This schoolhouse was located in the northerly section of Holden. The first building was on Mason Road leading to East Princeton. Unfortunately, the exact location of this building is not known. The second school for this district was built south of the original one at the junction of Wood Street and Mason Road.

1840 - No Summer Terms were held during the 1840/41 and the 1842/43 school years.

1844 - The School Committee report of 1844 states the house was "conveniently & comfortably constructed and in neat and good condition."

1846 - The Winter Term was not held during the 1846/47 school year.

1871 - On December 22, 1871 the building was destroyed by fire. Only the brick walls remained. School was held in nearby homes for the rest of the term. The town voted on October 5, 1872 to rebuild the school and appropriated $800. $960 was finally paid to J. H. Gleason for construction of the new school.

1872 - School was not held at all during the 1872/1873 school year.

1886 - The school was completely closed from 1886 through 1912.

1913 - Through the efforts of the people in that section of town, the school reopened again in the fall of 1913.

1917 - Declining enrollment forced the school to close for good after the 1917/18 school year ended. All students were merged into District #12.
