District 8:
Capt. James Davis' — Butt End

The first school held in this north western district was on a road that went westerly from Causeway Street into Rutland. Captain James Davis lived on this road. This road no longer exists.

1832 - By 1832 the school had been moved to the intersection of this road and Causeway Street. It appears that the school was kept in the home of Benjamin Hubbard. In its report of March 1, 1841 the School Committee reports that no schoolhouse existed, yet, in this district.

1846 - From the March 2, 1846 School Committee report it states, "The very small number who comprise district No. 8 with a commendable spirit of liberality, erected a new commodious & neat house. The district had no schoolhouse of any description before. Well may they & their 'little ones' rejoice." Later in the report the schoolhouse is described as "convenient & pleasant."

1865 - No school was held this year.

1860 - The School Committee reported, "In No. 8, the winter school was closed a week or two before the expiration of the six months, on account of the great difficulty which the small children, of which the school was primarily composed, had in passing over the drifted roads."

1866 - The children from this district merged with those of District #5 for the Summer Term.

1870 - It became obvious that by the late 1870s, there were not enough children in this district to support a school.

1881 - In 1881 the School Committee merged District 8 - Butt End District with District 5 - Jefferson. The school building was sold to William Prendergast who moved the building from its site. There are no known images that exist of this building, nor is it known where it was moved to. Mr. Prendergast was the owner of the Mt. Pleasant House in Jefferson. It can only be assumed that Mr. Prendergast moved the building to his hotel property.
